This was such an exquisite treat. Gorgeous Sarah, in such fine voice, every gesture, every expression on her face begging my camera to capture the moment. A warm August night, an audience in raptures, an artist astonished by those raptures. Me, there, so grateful.

I didn’t think last November’s show at the Orpheum here in LA could be topped, but Tuesday night at the Greek Theatre was beyond amazing. Just seeing Sarah basking in the euphoric glow of a wildly loving audience, at one of the loveliest outdoor venues anywhere, was magical. The show had not been selling well and then suddenly it was full! So glad I jumped on a last-minute ticket and was able to sit up close and take more photos.

I almost didn’t go to this show. But because sales were very slow – a scheduled second night was actually cancelled – tickets dropped in price. Extra incentive was Allison Russell opening (I need to do a post about her). And I had not been to the Greek Theatre for three long years. Surprising how small and intimate the Greek seemed after many shows at the vast Hollywood Bowl. The two venues are my very favourites, anywhere. Yes Red Rocks is fabulous but it is a lot of work to go there if you don’t live in Colorado. In LA we have the Bowl and the Greek and they are both heavenly.

I already knew and loved the Better Broken album when I saw Sarah eight months before, but in that time I had gone even deeper into the songs. I’m so glad she performed seven of those songs in the lovely set list. I wished she had included “Wilderness”, which has become one of my favourites, but I love that she puts “Reminds Me” in all her set lists, such a light, sweet song in the midst of a lot of beautiful, haunting anguish. If you still have not heard Better Broken, I highly recommend it as a monumental work in an artist’s later (not late) career. I’m pretty sure it is my favourite album from last year.

My camera is still begging to be put down, but with Sarah in focus, it magically sprung to life. Thank you, ten-year old falling-apart Sony Cyber Shot. I focused less on the back projections and band around her, subtle, sophisticated and sumptuous as her band is. I focused on Sarah’s magnificent presence, and that thoughtful, joyful, loving face of hers.
